The Nature Index 2022 annual tables released recently show the high-quality scientific research output of different countries and scientific research institutions in the field of natural sciences. According to the key indicator contribution share (Share) of the nature index, China's scientific research output in 2021 will increase by 14.4%, ranking second and the largest increase in the top ten countries.

According to this list, the United States still maintains the first place this year, but its scientific research output in 2021 will dro by 6.2% compared with 2020, which is the largest decline among the top ten countries. The countries ranked 3 to 10 are Germany, UK, Japan, France, Canada, South Korea, Switzerland and Australia.

China also stands out in the ranking of institutions – Chinese institutions are the only group in the annual Nature Index rankings that have seen a significant increase in research output. Among them, the Chinese Academy of Sciences continues to top the list of institutions in the Nature Index, with a share more than double that of second-ranked Harvard University. The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences entered the top 10 institutions in the world for the first time, jumping from 13th to 8th. The other two Chinese institutions in the world's top 10 are University of Science and Technology of China and Peking University. University of Science and Technology of China jumped two places to 9th, and Peking University also jumped two places to 10th.

The list shows that the top 10 institutions in the world are ranked 3rd to 7th: Max Planck Society of Germany, National Research Center of France, Stanford University of the United States, Helmholtz Research Center Association of Germany, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The universities of Oxford and Cambridge did not appear in the top 10.

It is worth mentioning that, based on the adjusted share change from 2020 to 2021, the Nature Index annual list also lists the 50 fastest-rising institutions in 2020-2021. Chinese institutions also top the list. Among them, the top 31 institutions with the fastest rise are all from China, and only 10 of the 50 institutions are from outside China. This is a significant change from the 2021 list, when China accounted for only two of the top 10 fastest-rising institutions.

In this regard, David Swinbanks, founder of The Nature Index, commented: "The annual Nature Index list shows that China's scientific research investment through its large, now well-established institutions is generating continuous and continuous growth in the natural sciences. Research results. In 2021, China's R&D investment has accounted for 2.4% of GDP, showing China's commitment to the field. This year, China's investment in research and development will have a more prominent impact on research growth, especially with our research in Germany, the United Kingdom , compared to changes seen in other countries such as France and Japan.”

"While the annual list is a good indicator of high levels of scientific output in the natural sciences, we encourage readers to use these results in conjunction with other scientific outputs, such as data, Software, intellectual property, etc.," added David Swinbanks.

It is understood that the Nature Index provides absolute counts and shares of papers published by institutions and countries, which can show the global high-quality scientific research output and cooperation. The database is compiled by Nature Research, a division of Springer Nature.
