South African poultry industry calls for anti-dumping duties to protect local industries

Date:2021-03-02  Hits:75

According to a report on the South African Daily Business Daily website on February 22, the South African Poultry Association (Sapa) stated that it is unfair to import cheap products from Brazil and the four EU countries because it creates jobs in the producing countries while inhibiting South Africa’s economic growth. Sapa has applied for anti-dumping duties on imported chicken from the above five countries (Brazil, Denmark, Ireland, Poland, and Spain). The poultry industry is the largest part of South Africa’s agricultural sector, contributing about 50 billion rand to South Africa’s GDP every year and providing at least 110,000 jobs. imports account for about 30% of chicken consumption in South Africa, with Brazil, the European Unio and the United States being the main suppliers. The International Trade Regulatory Commission (ITAC) will investigate the complaint and then make recommendations to the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition.
