On January 7-8, a series of activities of China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity "New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor" (referred to as "New Land-Sea Corridor") were held in Chongqing. Attending were the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the General Administration of Customs, China Railway Group Limited, China COSCO Shipping Cooperation Limited and China Merchants Group and representatives from 12 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities such as Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou, Gansu, Qinghai, Xinjiang, Yunnan, Ningxia, Sichuan, Inner Mongolia, Tibet, and Shanxi. Singapore's Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing led a delegation to Chongqing and representatives from the political, commercial and media sectors of ASEAN countries attended the meeting.

This activity was one of the important measures to implement the important consensus of the leaders of China and Singapore and the Memorandum of Understanding on the Cooperation of China-Singapore Connectivity Project “New Land-Sea Corridor” signed by the two governments during Premier Li Keqiang’s visit to Singapore in November 2018. At the dialogue meeting, Assistant Minister of Commerce Ren Hongbin said that the China-Singapore connectivity project is an important platform for the two countries to deepen the all-round cooperative partnership progressing with the times. In more than three years after its launching, under the guidance of the leaders of the two countries, relying on the three-level cooperation framework such as the deputy prime minister coordinating council, and for the joint efforts of central ministries, the relevant local departments and the business community, many results of pragmatic cooperation have been achieved with encouraging progress. The “New Land-Sea Corridor” construction will enhance the radiation and agglomeration effects, realize the organic connection with the international corridors such as Central Europe and Central Asia, form a complete loop of the “Belt and Road” through the western regions of China, and build a global connectivity network. Next, by improving domestic and foreign cooperation and co-construction mechanisms, accelerating relevant plans, comprehensively promoting pragmatic construction, and providing good publicity and guidance, the two sides will make greater achievements in improving the development of China-Singapore connectivity projects and the “New Land-Sea Corridor” construction and drive the common economic development of the western regions of China and countries along the route.

During the activity, eight governments of Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou, Gansu, Qinghai, Xinjiang, Yunnan, and Ningxia signed a framework agreement on the cooperation and co-construction of the “New Land-Sea Corridor”. Mayor of Chongqing Tang Liangzhi and Singapore Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing co-chaired the fourth meeting of the implementation committee of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity.

The China-Singapore connectivity project is the third inter-governmental cooperation project between China and Singapore. The leading departments of the two sides are the Ministry of Commerce of China and the Ministry of Trade and Industry of Singapore. Themed on “Modern Connectivity and Modern Service Economy”, with Chongqing as the operation center and with financial service, aviation industry, transportation and logistics, and information and communication as the four key cooperation areas, the project was launched in November 2015. The in-depth development of the “New Land-Sea Corridor” construction will push the project cooperation to a new level.
