Peace talks with rebels suspended until fighting stops: Colombian president

Colombian President Ivan Duque said on Monday that peace talks with National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas will remain suspended until the rebels stop fighting.

"We are fully willing to (have) dialogue if and only if they free all of the kidnapped victims and put a stop to these criminal actions," Duque said in a televised message.

His remarks came a day after two transit policemen were killed in northern Cesar Department in an ELN attack on the San Alberto-La Mata road.

"We are concerned about situations like yesterday's with the police -- no more terrorism," said Duque, whose government inherited the peace talks from former President Juan Manuel Santos.

Duque suspended talks with the ELN in Havana, Cuba, in September, in a bid to pressure the rebels to abandon their armed struggle.

Santos won a Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating a peace deal with the country's largest guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
